Break3 FAQ: habits, streaks and missed days

Short answers about forming a habit, the 21-day myth, missed days, streak freezes, NoFap and no-sugar challenges, and what Break3 does and does not do.

Is it true that it takes 21 days to form a habit?

No study found 21 days. The number comes from Maxwell Maltz's 1960 book Psycho-Cybernetics, where he wrote that a new self-image needs "a minimum of about 21 days". When habit formation was measured, the median was 66 days and the range ran from 18 to 254 days (Lally et al., 2010). More in how long it takes to form a habit.

Can you form a habit in 14 days?

Some people do: the fastest participant in Lally's study reached their plateau in 18 days (Lally et al., 2010), and a 2024 review found individual times as short as 4 days (Singh et al., 2024). For most people it takes much longer. In Break3, day 14 is a milestone, a point to mark progress, and the next ones are 21, 30, 60 and 90.

What is the 21/90 rule?

It is a self-help saying: 21 days to build a habit, 90 days to make it a lifestyle. Neither number comes from a study. Measured times are around two months at the median, with a wide spread between people (Singh et al., 2024).

What happens if I miss a day?

For the habit itself, very little: missing one opportunity "did not materially affect the habit formation process" in Lally's study (Lally et al., 2010). In Break3 one missed day is forgiven automatically, so the streak stays alive if your last check-in was yesterday or the day before. Check in today and the run continues.

What is a streak freeze?

A freeze protects a habit's streak for 3 days. You set it ahead of time, before a trip or a busy weekend, and it is free. For a single unplanned miss you don't need it, because one missed day is already forgiven.

Can I get a broken streak back?

Yes, within a week after the break. Revival is free and works once every 90 days per habit. After that window, the habit starts a new cycle. How streaks work has every rule in one table.

Does Break3 have one streak for all my habits?

No. Each habit has its own streak, so missing one habit doesn't affect the others. The home screen shows your longest one.

How long does it take to quit porn?

There is no measured timeline, and online day counts come from people's own reports. Break3 has a quit-porn (NoFap) preset with a day counter and milestones at 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60 and 90 days. If you feel you can't stop, talk to a doctor or a therapist. Break3 is a tracker and does not treat anything. See the NoFap timeline.

What happens after 30 days of no sugar?

No study has tested a "30-day no sugar challenge" as such, so be wary of promised results. The WHO recommends keeping free sugars under 10% of daily energy, ideally under 5% (WHO, 2015). The no sugar challenge covers how to run one.

Can I do a challenge with friends?

Yes. A group challenge is one habit for 2 to 50 people, by invitation; an invitation lasts 7 days. Each person keeps their own streak, and check-ins go to the shared feed. A weekly board shows the top 10 by check-ins over the last 7 days.

Can I do 75 Hard or 75 Soft in Break3?

Yes: create a custom habit with a 75-day end date and check in each day you complete the day's tasks, alone or as a group challenge. The official 75 Hard rules send you back to day 1 after any miss, while a Break3 streak forgives one missed day. 75 Soft is an unofficial variant without that restart rule; more in the 75 Soft challenge.

Is Break3 free?

Yes, for now. Paid plans are not on sale. It works in the browser at break3.app and in Telegram. You can try a habit without an account; the streak, the coach, the feed and group challenges need a sign-in with INITE.
