Break3 vs I Am Sober: which app to quit with
Break3 vs I Am Sober compared: features, prices, platforms, community and privacy, from their site and store pages as of 5 November 2026.
I Am Sober is one of the best-known sobriety apps. It has been around for years, with a large community and hundreds of thousands of store ratings. Break3 is younger and works differently. This comparison sticks to what each developer says about its own app: we checked iamsober.com and the App Store and Google Play listings on 5 November 2026. Store prices vary by country; the ones below are from the US App Store.
The short version
I Am Sober is the stronger choice as a mature sobriety app. It installs from the stores, runs on your phone and watch, has a big community organised by addiction, and has a daily pledge with an evening review. Break3 suits you if you want to start in the browser or in Telegram with nothing to install, quit together with friends, and watch a portrait of yourself change as the days add up.

Where I Am Sober is stronger
Track record. The App Store shows 4.9 out of 5 from about 191,000 ratings, and Google Play shows over 10 million downloads. On its site the developer reports more than 30 million addictions tracked and 11 million stories shared.
Depth on sobriety. I Am Sober has a withdrawal timeline that users add to, a daily recap of what made the day easier or harder, and communities for specific addictions, from alcohol to self-harm. If your goal is sobriety and you want to read people at the same milestone as you, Break3 has nothing like that base.
Platforms. A native app on your phone and watch is handier than a browser tab, and the subscription adds a Face ID or Touch ID lock and cloud backup.
Where Break3 is different
Break3 is free for now. In I Am Sober, private groups, the lock and cloud backup are part of the paid subscription; in Break3 a shared habit with friends is available as soon as you sign in.
Break3 opens in the browser and in Telegram, nothing to install. Without an account you can start a habit and check in, and the streak is kept on the server. The streak rules are in the guide How streaks work.
Then there is the portrait. You answer a couple of questions about who you want to be in a year, upload a selfie, and an AI draws you. Check-ins earn steps, steps add up to levels, and each new level opens the next portrait. Your selfie is never published.
Break3 also has an AI coach that remembers your goal and can set up a habit or check in for you from the chat.
Which to pick
If you're quitting drinking and want a large community of people with the same problem, a daily pledge and an app on your phone, I Am Sober is well proven. If you want to start right now in the browser or Telegram, bring friends into a shared habit and follow your own portrait, try Break3. You can also use both.
Neither app is treatment. If you have been drinking heavily for a long time, stopping suddenly can be dangerous; withdrawal and when to see a doctor are covered on How to quit drinking. The other guides are under Habits.
