Quit vaping app: 6 options compared, with prices
Six quit vaping apps and programs compared honestly, with features and prices checked on 5 November 2026, plus what the research says about texts and apps.
Search for a quit vaping app and you get a wall of five-star counters. Most are free to download, and the difference shows after install: what stays free, what needs a subscription, and whether anyone has ever tested it. Below are six options, including Break3, which is ours. Features and prices come from each app's App Store page and official site, checked on 5 November 2026. Prices change, so check before you subscribe.
What the research says first
Vaping cessation is newer than smoking cessation, so the evidence is thinner. The CDC's advice on quitting e-cigarettes is to treat it much like quitting smoking: make a quit plan, talk to a health care provider about medicines for cravings and withdrawal, and combine counselling with medication. It also points to free help, including the 1-800-QUIT-NOW quitline and text programs.
Two findings are useful when choosing an app.
- Text programs have the best evidence. A Cochrane review of 26 studies with 33,849 people found moderate-certainty evidence that automated text messaging helped people quit smoking compared with minimal support. For vaping specifically, a randomized trial of 2,588 young adults found that 7 months after joining Truth Initiative's This is Quitting text program, 24.1% had stopped vaping, against 18.6% in the control group.
- Apps on their own are barely tested. The same Cochrane review pooled five trials of smartphone apps, rated the evidence very low certainty, and found no clear sign that the apps raised quit rates.
So an app is best treated as a companion to a method with evidence behind it, not as the method.
How withdrawal usually goes
Nicotine is the same whether it comes from a cigarette or a vape. According to Smokefree.gov, from the US National Cancer Institute, withdrawal symptoms are usually strongest in the first days or weeks and ease the longer you stay off. An app's job is to get you through those first weeks.
The options
EX Program (formerly This is Quitting)
Truth Initiative's This is Quitting is the program from the 2021 trial above. Its old page now redirects to the EX Program, a free digital quit-nicotine program Truth Initiative built with the Mayo Clinic. It sends daily texts with tips and support and has an anonymous online community. It's free. On the sign-up site it is limited to users 13 and older and asks for a US phone number.
For: anyone in the US, especially young people. It's the only option here backed by a vaping-specific trial.
quitSTART
A free app from Smokefree.gov, made by the National Cancer Institute with the FDA. It gives tailored tips, tracks progress with badges, lets you tag places and times that trigger cravings, has games to ride out an urge and helps you get back on track after a slip. No purchases. It's written for smoking, so expect to translate "cigarette" into "vape" in your head.
For: people who want a free tool from a public health source.
Quit Vaping
An app by independent developer Jonathan Kopp, built for vaping. Its App Store page lists a streak timer, puff and pod trackers, craving and trigger trackers, a journal, guided breathing, a community forum and a "buddy system" for quitting with a friend. Paid options include a Quit Plan at $19.99 a month or $99.99 a year and a Quit Coach at $7.99.
For: vapers who want detailed tracking of how much they still use while they cut down.
Escape the Vape
A vape-free day counter with money saved, a home screen widget, milestones, a health timeline, guided breathing and a community, according to its App Store page. Premium runs from $6.99 a month to $49.99 for lifetime access.
For: people who want a simple counter that keeps savings in view.
Kwit
A French quit-smoking app that also covers vaping. It uses cognitive behavioural techniques and game elements, with progress stats, breathing exercises, mini-games for cravings, support groups and a tracker for cutting down on patches, gum or vaping devices. On the App Store, subscriptions run from $6.49 a week to $127.99 a year, with lifetime access at $169.99.
For: people who want a polished app and are willing to pay.
Break3
Ours. Break3 is a habit tracker for quitting things, not a vaping specialist. There is no vaping preset: you use the quit-smoking one or create a habit of your own.
- One check-in a day, with a note and up to four photos.
- One missed day is forgiven on its own. A freeze set ahead of time protects the streak for three days, and a broken streak can be restored for free within a week, once every 90 days per habit.
- Milestones on days 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60 and 90. Each check-in earns steps, and every new level opens the next portrait of the future you, drawn by an AI from your selfie if you add one.
- Group habits for 2 to 50 people by invite, each with their own streak and a weekly top 10. Useful if your friends vape too and you want to quit together.
- An AI coach that remembers your goal and can check in for you in chat.
What it lacks, honestly: no puff or nicotine tracking, no health timeline, no human coaches, and it isn't in the App Store or Google Play. It works in the browser and in Telegram. It's free for now, with no paid plans on sale. Without an account you can start a habit and check in; the portrait, steps, coach and groups need an INITE account.
For: quitting with friends, or quitting more than one thing at once, for free.

How to choose
- In the US, start with the EX Program's texts or the 1-800-QUIT-NOW quitline. Then add any app you'd actually open every day.
- If you want to taper and track puffs, Quit Vaping is built for it.
- If you want a free public tool, use quitSTART.
- If you're quitting with friends, Break3 lets you share one habit with up to 50 people.
And talk to a doctor or pharmacist about medicine for cravings. The CDC notes that the FDA has approved seven medicines for quitting smoking, and a provider can tell you whether any of them fits you.
More on the process itself, without the app talk, in the quit vaping hub. If you also smoke, see the quit smoking hub.
